Hydraulic Roller VS Mechanical Roller, Which is the King in Road Building?

Road roller, together with motor grader, is a common sight in various road constructions. Rollers are mainly used to compact gravel, sandy soil, concrete and other materials in the road constructions and foundations. Distinguished by the transmission system, it is mainly divided into two types: the mechanical roller and the hydraulic roller. The comparison between the two types on compaction performance, safety and cost will help you choose the suitable machine.

1. The mechanical roller has no front wheel drive and its working speed is fixed. The hydraulic one adopts full-wheel drive, which allocates more power to the vibrating drum, improving the compactness and reducing the compacting times, thus having more advantages in improving efficiency. And the hydraulic type needs no stop in the travelling process, improving 10% in efficiency than the traditional mechanical one.

2. For safety, braking is an important factor that decides whether the machine can be stopped immediately once emergency happens. The brake of the hydraulic one combines with the joystick and can be locked when emergency happens. The brake and joystick of the mechanical one is separated, which may cost more time for the operator to stop the machine under urgent situation. Thus, the hydraulic roller has higher safety than the mechanical one, especially in mountainous area and dam construction.

3. The hydraulic type does a better job in heat dissipation than the mechanical one. The hydraulic roller can be used in extreme temperature ranging from -40℃ to 60℃ with no trouble of oil leak.

From the comparison, we can conclude that the hydraulic roller has obvious advantages in efficiency, reliability, safety, environmental protection and ease of maintenance than the mechanical one. Though the mechanical roller is lower in price, but in the long run, the hydraulic road roller is more cost-effective with longer service life, less failure rate and lower maintenance costs.
